Machining Pure Copper: Overcoming Ductility
C110 is 99.9% pure copper. Due to extreme ductility, it tends to smear, tear, and create heavy gummy burrs on edges rather than fracturing cleanly.
Precision Machining Guidelines
Cutting Speed (Vc): 150 – 350 m/min.
Tooling: Ultra-polished, razor-sharp uncoated micrograin carbide or Single Crystal Diamond (MCD/PCD) tools with 20°+ positive top rake.
Burr Mitigation: Program chamfering passes with small ball or chamfer mills before finish passes to prevent exit roll-over burrs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you achieve a mirror finish on CNC machined pure copper?
Use monocrystalline diamond (MCD) or diamond-coated (PCD) tooling with light finishing passes (ap = 0.05mm) and high spindle RPM with light oil lubrication.
Why is C110 more difficult to machine than C360 brass?
C360 contains lead that causes chips to break instantly, whereas pure C110 is ductile and forms long, continuous ribbon chips that re-weld to the tool tip.
